We caught up with her to talk about her new single and what she’s got planned for the rest of 2022.
NSG: Hello Emily, how are you doing? What have you been doing today and how’s that going?
EC: So today I had a rehearsal for my EP launch on the 25th Feb at the 02 Arts club Liverpool. The session was very good and we worked on getting the music tight. Myself and the band have been very focused and now we are preparing for the energy to bring to the stage.
NSG: So you’ve been writing and singing since you were about 14? What made you want to become a musician?
EC: since a young age iv always been drawn to music it’s always stuck in my head, I love the way the guitar sounds and it could be old albums or tv shows, elevator, coffee shop music It intrigues me. I always love how music can bring people together regardless of whether they speak the same language or not everyone can dance along to music.
NSG: What was the first song you wrote and what was it about?
EC: The first song I wrote was called Can You Hear The Rain and the song was about climate change justice, and how it was upsetting to see the animals suffering and become endangered and I wanted to use my writing to fight against it and still do, as it’s a subject which is very close to me.
NSG: We’ve just been listening to your song ‘perspectives‘ from your upcoming EP and we love it! What’s the story behind it and the EP?
EC: My song perspectives is about how people perceive things differently both emotionally and visually and the beauty of how people perceive the world themselves. The truth is you never understand what a person is going through in life unless you have been in their shoes. The best thing you can do is picture it and show empathy. The new Ep is called ‘Me, You and Them‘ which is about the emotional analysis you have inside your own psyche. The song run is about dealing with escaping from emotional battles and this is reflected in the style of a nightmare and dealing with the pressures and confronting it. The song fragments is about dealing with grief and the different stages of grief. Certain objects like their favourite colour, song, which can trigger certain core memories of the person which make you cry or laugh. The song Barcelona is about sorting out your problems with a bit of sunshine and travelling. It’s the upbeat song of the Ep. I really hope you all enjoy it, I can’t wait to show you.
NSG: What do you think makes a good song?
EC: A song that has lots of rhythm and good lyrics which is easy to sing along to, if a song can make you dance in the kitchen or reflect on a part of your life it’s made an impact as music is a creative powerful tool for expression of one’s self.
NSG: We read somewhere you’re an actor as well! You’re doing it all ain’t you! What’s the dream then? Actor, singer, or both?
EC: Deffo a songwriter as it feels more natural to me and to be perfectly honest I’m obsessed with music, I love entertaining and performing.
NSG: You’ve played extensively with slots on festivals in the UK and Spain, out of all your gigs what’s been your favourite and why?
EC: Bickerstock as the creativity and art was amazing and it was a really fun experience and I really enjoyed it.
NSG: The pandemic hit the music and arts scene hard! How did you get through it not being able to perform and how do you feel about the lack of support that was available to artists during it?
EC: During the pandemic, I would perform weekly shows down my street where I live. I was entertaining my neighbors and singing happy birthday when it was people’s birthdays but more importantly, keeping people’s spirits high within the lockdown of covid which they all enjoyed. I also spoke to friends and family who supported me too which enabled me to focus on creating my music. I also did a song a day challenge of originals and covers for a month which got a lot of support, I’m happy to be back out performing and working now. I really like to keep myself busy in all things creative.
NSG: What’s the best food in the world and why?
EC: My fave food is a Burrito, and the reason being is because you can throw anything in it and it will taste good.
NSG: If you could invite and cook for three people from history who would they be and why? Oh, and what would you cook for them?
EC: I would like to cook a burrito for David bowie so that he can throw anything in it because Bowie was open minded and he could try new things. I would like to cook Emily Dickinson a Sunday roast as I feel it has sophistication and a sense of formality because it would suit her lifestyle. I would like to cook for HG wells and I would make him jelly as it reminds me of aliens and that’s what he writes about.
NSG: How’s the rest of 2022 looking for Emily Callacher?
EC: Exciting as always a lot of options and new things coming soon we have just finished my first ep so we will be going back to the lab to work on new material which takes time to develop, I’ll be performing at local and national shows before going on tour in the winter.
NSG: Who are the musicians or artists you feel have inspired you the most?
EC: The artists and bands that have inspired me the most are David Bowie, The Beatles, She Drew The Gun, Blondie and the reason for these acts are they have a uniqueness about their creativity and poetry.
