13 Questions with (SAHAJi)

by | Jul 27, 2022 | ARTIST INTERVIEWS

NSG had a chat with Shoutaro Nishida of Japanese duo ‘SAHAJi’ about their music, their love of Britsh rock music and what they have been up to on their recent visit to the UK

SAHAJi are from Japan and brothers Shotaro Nishida(Vocal&Guitar)

Youshiro Nishida(Guitars)

They have been playing music since they were kids and this year are celebrating their 20th anniversary

This year they are planning to play a gig in the UK

NSG: Hello guys and how are you today? What have you been up to this morning?

SN: I just returned from a trip to a place called Kyoto, Japan.

NSG: Your from Japan right? Where about in Japan did you guys grow up and what was the local music scene like there when you were young lads, were you involved in it much?

SN: We are from a Toyama, Japan. The Japanese music scene is not that cool lol. We were always different from the rest of them, and we never crossed paths.

NSG: We have followed you guys on Instagram for a year or two now and see you love the brit music scene, especially artists like Oasis and the Beatles. Can I ask why you are so drawn to British music?

SN: Our parents listened to a lot of foreign rock and pop music, so that’s part of the influence. I was 10 years old and my brother Youshiro was 8 years old when I saw an Oasis live DVD and I was hooked. They were brothers and we were brothers, so we always wanted to be like them and play in bands.

NSG: So for people who may not know you, your band is called ‘SAHAJi‘ and you have been together for around 20 years?  Who is in the band and when, where and how was the band formed?

SN:SAHAJi‘ is a Japanese brother band. I’m the Big brother Shoutarou Nishida and I’m on vocal and guitar, my little brother Youshiro Nishida plays the guitar and we are a duo. I met the original members when I was 10 years old, and they were brothers too, and they started playing instruments because of us. That was the beginning of the first SAHAJi. But our musical style changed with them, and we decided to continue SAHAJi with just the two of us.

(SAHAJi)

NSG: How would you describe your band’s sound?

SN:  Our sound is a traditional Rock’n’Roll sound. We are influenced by Oasis, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix!

NSG: You were just in the UK? What did you get up to whilst here?

SN: We were in England for 3 weeks in June. We’re going back to England in October for the gig. During our stay in England, I went to London, Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, and Brighton. We also went to Liam Gallagher’s Knebworth show on June 3rd and went to The Rock and Roll Circus to see our buddy Andrew Cushin. In Newcastle, we had a lot of drinks with Andrew and his friends, and on the way back to the hotel while drunk, someone sang SAHAJi’s debut song ‘Tell Me All Your Feelings to us, and we were so touched that they were singing their own song over 9400km away!

NSG: Will your band be playing live whilst you are here?

SN:  Yes! Details will be published on social networking sites!

NSG: Who are the greatest band ever?

SN: Oasis

NSG: If you could sit down and have dinner with three people from history, who would they be and why?

SN: Liam Gallagher, John Lennon and David Bowie and because I just love them! I don’t have any other reason!

NSG: What is the live music scene like in Japan?

SN: No more good live music venues, no more big events, I feel like real music is almost dead. That’s why I think they need our music!

NSG: What music are you listening to at the moment? Like what’s on your playlist?

NS: oasis, Liam Gallagher(C’mon You Know), Andrew CushinMemories, that’s what I’m especially listening to right now.

(SAHAJi)

NSG We notice you’re got a real good taste in fashion, what or who inspires how you dress?

NS: We’re influenced by the fashions of Liam Gallagher, The Beatles, Paul Weller, Brian Jones and David Bowie. Our fashion has always been with the music!

NSG: How is the rest of 2022 looking for you guys and where can people listen to more of your music?

NS: I’m going to England in October so people can hear Sahaj’s music there, so I think this year will be yet hot one!
