“Ellis J Barraclough is ready to break through.” – Music Talkers
19-year-old Ellis J Barraclough showcased a rare blend of mature songwriting and youthful charm with his debut single ‘Patience’. Adding fresh support from Americana UK and Music Talkers to previous backing from BBC Introducing, BBC Radio London and BBC Radio, he continues to elevate his undeniable potential as he shares the follow-up single ‘Blasphemy’. Listen HERE.
Already a fan favourite through local shows, ‘Blasphemy’ has a warm, wide-ranging appeal that will introduce Ellis to new audiences. Its jangly acoustic singer-songwriter style is driven by radiant summer soundtrack melody, with Ellis’s voice sparkling with a beguilingly bright pop edge. But there’s a depth to it too, with a melancholy lyric about love, regrets and moving on that provides the counterpoint to its sunny disposition. The song was written solely by Ellis and was produced by Vincent Garcia.
Ellis says, “It was a time when I felt really confused and everything in my life seem to come with a thousand questions and I didn’t have any of the answers.”
The ‘Blasphemy’ video further highlights Ellis’s future star potential. His performance captures his personality – the natural bonhomie and relaxed vibe of a man with quiet self-confidence in what he does. And the setting certainly helps unlock that vibe, with the performance having been filmed on the canals of Venice.

Ellis grew up in Hull as part of a family in which music was a constant presence. His grandfather had been a gigging musician, and his uncle’s band almost made it big during the early 2000s indie scene. Just as important was the day-to-day soundtrack of The Beatles and Kings of Leon and family jam sessions whenever they all got together. So it was no surprise that Ellis was playing guitar at the age of seven and writing songs when he was twelve.
His music interests span a huge amount of ground, having also performed with Ocean Colour Scene live duo and covered artists as varied as The Housemartins, David Bowie and Sade. He’s also a fan of the infinitely more aggressive sounds of Tool, Deftones and Bathory.
Ellis was discovered by Vincent Garcia, veteran of Drizabone, the ‘90s soul/acid-jazz band who scored a big hit with ‘Real Love’ and whose remix of Shanice’s ‘I Like Your Smile’ turned the original into an international smash. He helped him land his first big gigs, including shows with the comedian and writer Lucy Beaumont as well as Inspiral Carpets and Thomas Dolby, and is also his regular producer and collaborator. Now he’s aiming to leave a failed career as a plumber behind to make it as a pop star.
Having until now primarily performed solo, Ellis J Barraclough will debut his new five-piece live band, The Sunscreen, with headline shows at the Whiskey Jar in Manchester (May 20th) and the Hull Social (May 22nd), tickets for which are available HERE. He is also confirmed for the Off The Tracks Festival in Castle Donington at the end of August.
