Jamie Webster Cavern Club 20/10/21
Jamie Webster is riding on the crest of a wave. His 2020 album ‘We Get By’ saw him propel in the eyes of his city from football chant leader to talented singer-songwriter. Now, a debut gig at The Cavern Club in Liverpool on Wednesday night has wet the appetite for his upcoming second album.
The gig, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and organised by This Feeling (who recently promoted fellow Scousers RATS at the same venue) and Scotts Menswear, saw Webster chime off the anthem of youth Going Out and brand new single Davey Kane, released just hours after the set.
The latter is a social commentary that we’ve come to expect from the Scouse singer-songwriter, whose tracks remain personal and political. It’s an exploration of how UK prisons operate in comparison to more rehabilitative models in Scandinavia, a far cry from a boozey foot-stomper, and Webster has been given a hand by actor Jack McMullen (Little Boy Blue, Time) for the music video.
Supported by his band, who accompanied him throughout the recording of new album Moments, Webster took the Cavern through a solid headline set. There are slower, mellow tracks in there, not always easy to fit in with the knowledge that the crowd can’t wait for big tunes Weekend In Paradise and This Place. That alone is a sign that he is developing as a live artist, and it’s earned him a slot at the city’s biggest venue next year.
He’ll play the M&S Bank Arena on Saturday 10 November 2022 – a huge deal for any Liverpool artist, and a mark of just how much Webster’s hometown has backed him. Before that, three upcoming sold-out nights at the Eventim Olympia in December will mark the start of an exciting new chapter, before the release of that second album Moments on 28 January.
