The return of the inimitable Marc Almond with news of his upcoming album ‘I’m Not Anyone’ (coming July 12th 2024) inspired a fresh wave of attention for one of the UK’s most singular artists. Greeted by BBC Radio 2 airplay and an interview with Michael Ball as well as coverage from Clash, Hot Press, Retropop, Super Deluxe Edition, xs-Noize and more, Marc also received the honour of praise from Bob Lind, the writer of the album’s first taster track ‘Elusive Butterfly’. He said, “Thanks for breathing new life into ‘Butterfly’, it’s heartening to know that 58 years down the line, my music is still reaching the hearts of talented artists and their fans.”
From that compelling introduction, Marc now unveils the album’s second single – his take on Rita & The Tiaras’ ‘Gone With The Wind Is My Love’. Under Marc’s spell, the song is seen from a fresh perspective rather than completely reinvented as he frames it within the prism of a hedonistic cabaret rather than a cult ‘60s soul classic. And of course, his super-committed vocal delivery feels like he is living every word that he performs. It’s also a song with a tangible connection to Marc’s past. The song was originally performed by Gloria Jones of ‘Tainted Love’ fame, but her version didn’t surface for several decades.
Marc says of the new single; “This is what I call a wind machine song, an intense emotional rush of ‘60s soul drama.”
Both ‘Elusive Butterfly’ and ‘Gone With The Wind Is My Love’ feature on the upcoming ‘I’m Not Anyone’ album which sees Marc apply his style to songs which can now be discovered by new audiences. Choosing the songs was a lengthy process informed by a simple ethos: “More than ever this time I’ve gone for how a song makes me feel and the emotional resonance it holds – reflective songs for an older artist, perhaps.” The collection was given an orchestral rock sheen by producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Stevens who, with a small team, made a mature album with a young heart.
In addition to launching the new album, Marc Almond has been busy with various other projects in recent weeks. His ‘Deities and Demons’ exhibition completed a run in Soho, where he displayed a collection of original collage moodboards, pagan self-portraits, personal ephemera and memorabilia. In addition, his limited edition 7” ‘Marc Sings The Shangri-Las’ reached No.2 on the Official Vinyl Singles Chart, and he has produced new music with Tris Penna for Dana Gillespie, starting with her recent single ‘Spent The Day In Bed’.
Marc recently announced the following UK tour in support of ‘I’m Not Anyone’ and limited tickets remain available HERE.
Soft Cell also have an exclusive UK show on the calendar at Blenheim Palace on June 14th.
