The Mono LPs – Hell, Save My Soul

By Lewis McWilliam

2019 eh! Live gigs and big hugs, packed bars, and late-night pubs. Remember them? Whilst we wait for things to come back, we still have plenty of new music to go through. For me, there’s no better place to start than with  Liverpool’s Mono LPs and their new tune “Hell, Save My Soul”

Opening with a riff straight out of the book of Jimmy Page, your head dives into a supernova sized intro. One that features crashing cymbals, thick bass, and fuzzy guitars. As the madness subsides, frontman Ste Reid rocks over to the mic grabs it, and gives us a piece of his soul.

‘Something about the way’ he utters, ‘something about the way you look tonight’. One hears the spirit of Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet  Revolver) and a young Mick Jagger channel through Mr Reid and into our ears.  Our frontman is not alone though, he shares this spotlight with drummer Tom  McCabe’s powerful tom-tom rhythms over the verse.

‘Slick’ is a word one could typically use to adequately describe the James Bond-like swagger of this tune. But this all changes, as the espionage breaks and the chorus drops. ‘Hell, Save My Soul, Cos the World Keeps Bringing Me Down’  cries Reid. Indeed, both charismatic frontman and the gallant band instantly pull out their best Beatles and Stevie Wonder and give us the biggest pop hook this side of rock history.

The band transverse dimensions with Vicky Reid’s incredible cello, specifically during the mid-section. In fact, one can invariably hear all instruments being played to their fullest. Kudos should be given to the band for their extraordinary dexterity. One naturally hears the extensive work remunerated in this song. Both power and passion are laced within and one hears this fury throughout.

“Hell, Save My Soul” is a song that is as much suited to the jukebox as it is to the Spotify playlist. The band capture both the old and new and mix it up as if it were a Tarantino movie. We may have to wait a bit for the venues to reopen,  but at least we have some kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll whilst we wait!

The single came out yesterday on all major stores, you can give them a listen and follow by clicking on the pink social media icons below.
