THE RUBY TEARS STAGE FUNDRAISER
LIVERPOOL BAND THE RUBY TEARS STAGE FUNDRAISER FOR SUICIDE SUPPORT CENTRE JAMES’ PLACE
The Ruby Tears, Ginnel and Modern Marriage @ LEAF, Bold Street Liverpool, Friday 4th March 2022
A Fundraising Night for James’ Place featuring three North West bands
Liverpool band The Ruby Tears are set to stage a special fundraising event for James’ Place – the city’s suicide support centre for men.
The night of music takes place at Bold Street venue Leaf on Friday 4 March. and also includes Preston band Ginnel and fellow Scousers Modern Marriage.
The evening – which aims to raise money and awareness for the work of the charity was the idea of Ruby Tears guitarist and songwriter Jeff Skellon.
Explaining why he has got involved, he said:” I have worked in the touring music industry for many years.
“Over that time I have lost a lot of friends and colleagues to suicide. You’d never know when they were on tour – when they were often the ‘life and soul’ – that they had any problems in their life. Every one of them has surprised me.
“Having centres like James’ Place helps reduce the number of lost lives. We hope that we can help make a difference. Three years ago I organised another event with a different band. That evening raised over £1,300 – this time I’m hoping we can do even better!”
A spokesperson for James’ Place said: “We exist to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis. We do this through a proven clinical service, delivered by trained, professional therapists in a warm, safe environment.
“Since opening in Liverpool in 2018, we have treated over 500 men. We are very grateful to Jeff and the bands for their brilliant support – we rely on donations and fundraisers to carry out our life-saving work. If you are a man in a suicidal crisis, or you are worried about someone, you can find more information about our service on our website. www.jamesplace.org.uk.“
Formed during the weirdness of lockdown, The Ruby Tears started out as an online collaboration in 2020 between Jeff and Manchester-based singer John Goodfellow. The pair had written and released a clutch of EPs before finally meeting in person in 2021.
Last year they recruited drummer Mark Robson and bassist Jim Sangster and have since been busy building a reputation as an exciting live act with gigs around town.
Jeff says:” Our influences have come from the late 60s and 70s rock, New Wave and 80s Post Punk. All that is good from that period will surface in our music at some point. Sometimes you might hear Bowie, The Clash and Burt Bacharach all in the same track, in another, The Byrds and Elvis Costello!”
Ginnel are a new and exciting post-punk primitive noise pysch outfit all hailing from in and around Preston. Their lineup includes members of The Common Cold, Big Red Bus, Notnowkato, Evil Blizzard and John Peel favourites, The Dandelion Adventure. “Think Mark E Smith fronting Gang Of Four and you’ll be getting there”, says Jeff.
Modern Marriage are a new three piece crossing styles from post-punk to new wave to indie- rock with high energy and a desire to be creative, entertaining, unique and interesting. They have been making a name for themselves since their first gig at the Cavern in support of Alan McGee’s spoken word tour back in December.
Jeff adds:” If you can’t make time to come and support us or if you just can’t make the journey, a just giving page has been set up and any donations will be gladly accepted –
